autodesk acquires alias

Yikes. Could this be the end of Maya as we know it? I groan to see Maya, a wonderful 3D application, swallowed up by the current owners of 3DS MAX. Good thing I'm a Lightwave guy. ;-)

Scott is a "LightWave guy" ... hmmm
Nothing can beat 3DSMax (and MacroMedia Director ... LOL).
Taste this piece of "3DS Director RTS"

lol! hey, Necro- can't argue with your Shockwave games- that looks SWEET! Director does rock, but I'm biased there... ;-)

(perhaps if 3DSMax was cross-platform, I'd be interested- but between that point, the "Battlestar Galactica" and "Serenity" effects Zoic Studios has been cranking out - and some HD plates I've been rendering myself lately, I'm feeling quite satisfied being a Lightwave guy for hard surfaces - Maya for soft surface modeling, though.)

I agree: LightWave is a great piece of work.
According to the latest statistics, this is the worldwide TOP5:
1) 3DSMax
2) MAYA
3) SoftImage XSI
4) LightWave
5) Cinema 4D
Also you may check my POLLs from the main page.
The 8th one is from 01-june-2004 and is quite interesting.

best regards

Interesting, but is that top 5 counted by sales, or what? Depending on industry you're using it for (gaming, broadcast, film, previz, bla bla bla), a "top 5" can change quickly. Can't believe XSI is still anywhere near the top 5 in any category, though, it's the most counterintuitive of the bunch! Horrid usability.

But hey, I say use whatever tool you're the most comfortable with. It's more about the output than the name, to me- I haven't had a gig that asked for anything other than Maya or LW in some time, but I'm also not doing that full-time anymore. ;-)

That TOP5 is counted by gaming industry (the most important of course ... ha ha ha).
SoftImage XSI is used by many game developers (don't ask me the reason because I don't know it).
Talking about "use whatever tool you're the most comfortable with", I agree.

"see" you soon.
