great things about 2006
So many good things about this year it's hard to count, but were I to list 'em up:
- Being acquired by Adobe didn't suck - at all! I had my fears, but most all were assuaged in short order.
- Getting pregnant. Well, obviously I'm not pregnant, but my wife Desiree is and the process of getting there was, of course, quite fun. My perspective on life has already changed quite a bit in the last few months since finding out, and I can only expect 2007 is going to be a year of revelations in this respect once our lil' boy arrives.
- My own musical resurgance. I've played more this year than in the past 8 combined, and am wondering why the hell I took such a long professional hiatus? Oh yeah, it was the cheating, lying, and most importantly - backstabbing record labels - that's why. Fortunately I'm an independent now and don't hold the same stock in being rich and famous I did when I was 21, so the major labels (and their management) can all still go to hell in a fast train- they don't affect my career at all now. Thank God for that. :)
- Web 2.0 and social networking. Although I really shunned sites like myspace, last.fm, flickr and 43things before, embracing the new wave o' the web has helped me reconnect with so many old friends in 2006 it's almost astounding. I still think the Web 2.0 economy is a big bubble waiting to burst, but don't really care anymore.
- Intel Macs. I can finally throw both my Windows and Linux PCs over to charity, and virtualize everything on my overwhelming platform of choice. Painful transition at first while waiting for my favorite apps to get ported to Universal Binary (or native), but now that most all have made the transition, I couldn't be happier, or more productive.
- The November 2006 elections. Seeing the neocons get their collective asses handed to them on a platter was gratifying in a rather perverse way. Yeah, I know- petty as hell - but after suffering 6 years of overly-hypocritical pundit hell by wind-blowing asshats like Michelle Malkin, Sean Hannity, Rush "Where's my meds" Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly trying to assert that neoconservatism even remotely mirrored the ideals of the Republican party as a whole, it's nice to see the right rise up and throw out the trash. Sure, the Dems have a long way to go themselves (and I will agree the 'victory' was more a result of dissatisfaction with the current Congress and administration than a carte-blanche endorsement of Democratic ideals and leadership), but small steps are good too.
- Battlestar Galactica. Yes, it's been out for more than just 2006, but this was the year - housing both the finale of season 2 and the opening half of season 3 - that the fledgling SciFi network kicked out their sophomore jinx and mainstream bias- and proved that a minor network could truly unseat the majors with a first-class show, writing staff, and production values. Television just doesn't get any better than the new BSG, I'm afraid. If you haven't seen it, you really should.
Yeah, there's probably a bunch more great things, but that's what came to mind short-term. 2007 is already shaping up to be a year of much good things as well- and I wish both you and your family best wishes for a prosperous and happy one.
Happy New Year! Now I'm off to prepare for tonight's festivities, and my last 36 hours of vacation before returning to work. Where does the time go?
